A wide range of dormancy-breaking chemicals have been commercially used to help trees to enhance bud break. Based on the need of new products with lower toxicity and aggression to the environment, the identification of new compounds carrying these features plus great efficacy in breaking the dormancy of apple buds was the main goal of this study. The results were obtained on three apple cultivars Maxigala, Fuji Suprema and Daiane and over a range bud breaking combining compounds and concentrations (Dormex® + Assist®; Syncron® + Assist®; Nitroactive® + Syncron®; CaNO3 + Syncron®; Erger® + Nitroactive®). The field experiment was located in a Southern region of Brazil where winter chilling accumulation is inadequate. Trials were carried in the 2012/2013 crop season. Full bloom and end of flowering were in advance in relation to the control treatment for the three cultivars. Syncron® or Dormex® shortened the flowering period. Thirty and sixty days after product application axillary and terminal bud break of the three cultivars were maximized by the compounds. Fruit set was variable in the three cultivars, however when compared to control, all treated trees had a higher percentage of fruit set. Syncron® + Assist® or Syncron® + Nitroactive® proved efficacy in inducing axillary and terminal bud break of apple trees when compared to the standard treatment Assist® + Dormex®. |
